Davie's Dark Words
by: Sean Swain September 22, 1999

Just when you think it could not get any worse for the irish (0-2 vs. the big ten before Saturday), Bob Davies made the choice to make a sideline pass when the irish only needed one yard on third down and didn't want to go for it on fourth down in a critical situation. From this time on, it was all down hill the rest of the day for the frustrated coach.

The echoes of the Student Section roared in anger as "Fire Davies" roared from the students as Davies and the irish walked right past the students and into the locker rooms after the irish fell to 1-3 on the year, getting swept by the Big Ten this year in consecutive weekends.  Still, it didn't get any better for the coach.

Davies stepped up to the podium to face the press after the game and the question was immediately asked: "Why didn't you go for it on fourth and one?"  Davies only answer didn't help his situations.  Davies replied by saying this is a young ball club and they are still in a learning process, "WE JUST DIDN'T HAVE FAITH AT THE TIME THAT WE COULD HAVE MADE THE FIRST DOWN." The sickening words that nobody would think that Davies, always being positive, would ever say!

The question here is, how long does the staff realize that the Faust-like coaching style will never work.  I have always backed Davies and have been excited to see the Irish take the field each Saturday.  Where is that dominating team?  Did it go when Davies took the position?  The "soft hearted" Davies needs to realize what he is saying and realize what he needs to do with the type of team he has!

Many questions are needing to be answered during the week and also the rest of the year. What is to be expected during the year, we will see.  For now Irish fans, we take one week at a time and see what Davies has up his sleeves for the Oklahoma game.  With the fire put out in the play calling for the past two weeks I wonder, what is going on in that coaching staff???  Davies new contract does not help the situation either.  How can a coach put down a powerful team like we have this year?  Let's just get through the year and hope things will fall into place!
