Strong Finish Would Complete Class, Almost

Notre Dame needs to close strong with its 4 remaining prospects: Victor Abiamiri, Ambrose Wooden, Chase Anastacio, and Mitchell Thomas. If Notre Dame can land three of them it would give them 21 commitments this season and would nearly complete Tyrone Willingham's first full class.

The current rumors point Wooden and Abiamiri, the two teammates from the Gillman School in Baltimore to Notre Dame. Abiamiri is said to be coming to ND for sure due to a recruiting violation at Maryland. A Maryland assistant reportedly offered Victor $300 to come to Maryland. Because of this, Maryland can't recruit him anymore and it would appear he is headed Notre Dame's way. Abiamiri would give Notre Dame its first dominant pass rusher out of high school in years. Abiamiri combined with Justin Tuck could give Notre Dame a pair of dominating ends that would cause havoc for opposing defenses.

Wooden has been said to have been leaning toward the Irish for some time now. Wooden is a versatile athlete who is being recruited as a WR but could play in defensive backfield as well. Wooden is a play maker and would compliment Notre Dame's current commitments Jeff Samardzija and Chinedum Nduwke very well. Both are said to be solid receivers but neither are labeled as burners, Wooden could be that guy.

Chase Anastacio will announce his decision later today and is also being recruited as a WR. He has good height and speed and would be a valuable piece to Notre Dame's new West Coast offense. Anastacio is another versatile athlete who could play in the defensive backfield. He is down to Notre Dame and in state schools Virginia and Virginia Tech.

The least likely of the final four to commit would appear to be Mitchell Thomas. It will be very hard to pull Thomas out of the south where Auburn, Alabama, and Georgia will give Notre Dame a dog fight. Thomas is a fast linebacker who runs a 4.5 40 and would allow Notre Dame more versatility to move Dwight Stephenson to defensive end.

While getting three or even four of these prospects would give Notre Dame a top 5 class, it would not be totally complete. Notre Dame will have come up short at offensive line and running back. Notre Dame whiffed on Joe Thomas and Mike Jones in the last week. Getting at least one of them to go with Ryan Harris and John Sullivan would have given Notre Dame three top 10 offensive linemen. Getting only two this year will put extra pressure on them for next year.

At running back, Notre Dame was in fine shape with David Marrero and Travis Thomas with the possibility of moving Isaiah Gardner back to running back. Marrero however decommitted and is heading to Stanford. Notre Dame made a late push for Tashard Choice but got in the game too late. Notre Dame also missed out on Reggie Bush who never made it to Notre Dame for a tour. Notre Dame needed a difference maker at running back to go along with their commitments, but missed out. This makes running back a big need for next year.

Despite the short comings at running back and offensive line, this class will still be a success if ND lands Abiamiri and Wooden and then either Anastacio or Thomas. Notre Dame will have a lot of top notch players and added play makers at several key positions such as quarterback with Brady Quinn and tight end with Greg Olsen. Notre Dame needs to finish strong however and can't come away empty on signing day this year. Last year Notre Dame was spurned by Lorenzo Booker and the year before by Shaun Cody and that can't be the case this year. All signs are pointing to Wooden and Abiamiri at least coming so things are looking good.
