Urban Legend

I was in the concession line ordering some nachos when it happened. At the time, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. We were coming off a solid performance against Navy, and up 20-7 at the half over the reviled Eagles, and before I even had a chance to enjoy it, some BC fan had to ruin it for me.
"You watch. We'll come back in the second half and beat these guys," he said.
Instead of scoffing, a cold chill went down my spine. That feeling you get in the basement of an old house and you feel like someone is watching you. And, that's when I knew he was probably right. If there was a way for the Irish to lose this game, Ty and Co. would find it.
And find it they did.
There comes a time when you know that a coach just isn't going to cut it. At Notre Dame it seems to take longer, especially when the guy finds a way to start out 8-0. There was magic in those first eight games. These days there is magic, but it ain't the kind we saw in early 2002. It's more like a bad card trick that isn't good enough to fool an eight year old, let alone a quality college football coach on the opposite sideline (my apologies to Lloyd Carr). Sure, Ty might be able to pull a rabbit out of the hat every now and then, but too often he ends up standing on stage, empty handed, blaming the hat.
Or, maybe it's the bunny that did not execute.
Today my biggest fear is not that Notre Dame will honor its contract with Ty Willingham. My biggest fear is that ND will honor that contract, and another program will hire former Irish assistant coach Urban Meyer.
What Meyer has accomplished in three years as a head football coach at two different programs is truly remarkable. I won't bore you with the facts, but anyone who doubts the guy is an amazing talent has not bothered to read his bio. It's all there in black and white. And, he hasn't just been successful on the football field; his players have also improved in the classroom.
Now, as I said, Meyer certainly has his detractors. Some say he hasn't been at a big time college football program. Could he handle the heat? The pressure? Will his whacky offensive system work with this schedule?
Blah, blah, blah. Read the bio. Check out what his team has done so far this season.
Simply stated, Urban Meyer is a legend waiting to happen. He has been at two college football programs and had an instant impact. How many programs does a guy have to turn around before people believe he can do it at Notre Dame? Two is enough for me.
If he is going to be a legend, I want him to do it at Notre Dame.

Kevin White, please do the right thing for this program and let Tyrone Willingham go. Hire Urban Meyer before someone else does. Ty has had his chance to do his magic show. Let's not wait until he gets booed off the stage. Besides, I couldn't bear to see Meyer somewhere like Florida, making the statue of liberty disappear.
What are we waiting for? Let's create our own Urban Legend, and bring the magic back to Notre Dame for good.
The sooner, the better.
