Victor Abiamiri has been selected for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year watch list Tuesday. Abiamiri has the opportunity to be the first player from Notre Dame named as a finalist for the award when the announcement is made next month.
Abiamiri was one of 28 to make the watch list. The senior has put together an impressive season for the Irish so far, a 7 game span to date. He is ranked 19th in the country with 6 sacks and 10th in the country with the 10.5 tackles for loss, both leading the 2006 Irish squad. He also leads the team in quarterback hurries with 11.
Four others were named to the list from Notre Dame’s 2006 opponents; Bruce Davis and Justin Hickman of UCLA, Anthony Spencer of Purdue, and LaMarr Woodley of Michigan.
Abiamiri has a chance to add to his numbers in the Irish’s next match up this Saturday against Navy. The game is at 12 pm and will be broadcast nationally from Baltimore on CBS.
