Ronald Talley Burning Bridges on the Way Out

Yesterday I posted that former Notre Dame defensive end Ronald Talley was transferring to the University of Delaware.  A day later there’s been numerous quotes from Talley about why he left and they aren’t very positive towards Notre Dame..

Talley left Notre Dame, in part, because of a verbal disagreement with Weis about his role on the team. Talley said the coaches expressed a desire to move him from end to tackle. ”Basically, I lost trust in them,” Talley said. ”They wanted to do things with me to their advantage, not my advantage.” (Chicago Sun Times)

“Some things were going on that were unjustified,” said Talley, who was also considering transferring to Tennessee State. “I really just couldn’t trust the coaches any more.” (Central Delaware News)

“It seemed like the coaching staff would tell me one thing and then another,” he said. “The situation they wanted to put me in wasn’t in my best interests. It was only in their best interests. In the end, I really couldn’t trust them. It was enough for me not to want to be there anymore.” (South Bend Tribune)

Ok, so basically what I am getting from these quotes is that the coaches wanted to put Talley in a position where it was more beneficial to his team instead of where he preferred to play and he didn’t like that.

When coaches want to move you to another position its usually for two reasons.  Either you aren’t good enough at your current position or there is need at the position they want you to move you to.  Either way, in both situations, a position move is in the best interests of the TEAM not the coaches like Talley suggests.

None of the reports had quotes from Charlie Weis, and you most likely won’t see any quotes from Weis about Talley other than wishing him luck.

  1. The last time I checked there isn’t a I in team. Many of the kids today are about themselves and not the team. The parents seem to get in on the act as well. If little Johnny doesn’t get what he wants they’ll take him some other place. I’m glad he’s left ND because there isn’t a place on the team for someone like him for that matter any team. It use to be you had to earn the position and Weis is making the young men do just that and from what I can gather Tally just doesn’t have what it takes nor the will. He wants it handed to him just because he thinks he should get it without work. The ARMY has tought me alot especially about teamwork. In my MOS if I put myself before the team then people die. I can’t put myself before the team. The IDEA of the team first doesn’t seem matter anymore. It’s ALL ABOUT LITTLE JOHNNY an noboby else.

  2. I saw those quotes as well and thought the same things. A position move is not something a coaching staff would do just for their own personal edification. Position changes are to put the best players on the field at one time so that the team has the greatest chance to succeed.

Moving from defensive end to defensive tackle, in my opinion, is not as significant a move as moving from running back to linebacker. It is too bad that he couldn’t have taken a page from Travis Thomas.

  3. I’m not in a position to say whether or not Talley has a shot at the pros, but Delaware has had 8-9 guys sign pro contracts in the last three years. Mike Adams is starting games for the Niners. Obviously these aren’t great numbers compared to a Notre Dame, but the point is if you’re good enough, you could play at Podunk State and still get your shot.

  4. The funny thing is this guy is too stupid to realize he was basically splitting time with 3 other guys at probably Notre Dame’s weakest position. But good luck getting to the NFL through Delaware (not that he was going there anyway)
