Charlie Weis talked quite a bit Tuesday about the place kicking situation now that Brandon Walker is just 1 of 7 kicking field goals this year. It sounds like there has been some competition going on in practice so far this week.
Q. Any update on the kicking?
COACH CHARLIE WEIS: We’ll resolve that here probably today. And when I do, I won’t hold you on that. I’ll tell you where we are.Q. I know you mentioned the kicking situation. What’s the process of that? How many people are involved in this competition?
COACH CHARLIE WEIS: It will be over by tomorrow. Let me just wait until tomorrow, because in the past I’ve left things so gray it’s been a big guessing game and everything. Let me just get through it and I’ll come back to you and I’ll answer more directly tomorrow. Okay? Fair enough?
So stayed tuned. I’ll post an update as soon as I can after Weis addresses the media tomorrow. Whatever Weis and staff ends up deciding on this situation, there probably isn’t an easy fix. If they stick with Walker you send out a kicker who is 1 for 7 on field goals this year on the road this weekend. If they give Ryan Burkhart a try, you send out a kicker who hasn’t kicked a field goal in a game for his first attempt on the road this weekend.
One thing to consider here in case you are thinking, “well no one could do any worse than what Walker’s done so far.” While Walker is just 1 for 7, his kicks have had distance and height. One for 7 is pretty bad, but a blocked field goal on the road against a team that is good at blocking kicks would be a hell of a lot worse than just a miss.
The kid can kick an extra point. Just tell him to act like its an extra point!
Well, when the lights are on I don’t think Ryan can do any worse.
