Reports early Tuesday night were that Charlie Weis was definitely coming back for a 5th season in South Bend in 2009. So far the University has yet to confirm the reports and instead said they were not aware of any immanent announcement.
The Chicago Sun-Times contacted the school, but Brian Hardin, the sports information director for football, said that he was not aware of any announcement. Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick did not respond to requests for comment from ESPN.com, and Weis was on a recruiting trip to Hawaii and California.
“When we have something to say and it’s the appropriate time to say it, we’ll say it,” Notre Dame spokesman John Heisler said.
This could just be the University waiting to say anything until Swarbrick is back on campus or it could be something more. At this point, who know? Like everything else I’ve said on this matter, the situation is just weird. If the decision has been made to retain Weis, why not just confirm the reports so that there isn’t any further speculation about Weis’s future?
This is quickly turning into a soap opera and the longer it plays out the stranger it gets. Hopefully we get some sort of official word from the University on the subject because the non-confirmation from the University is not helping quiet any negative recruiting being used against Notre Dame at this point.
I hate to admit it but maybe this was for the best. Worst case scenerio our underclassmen weapons (Armando Allen, Floyd, Rudolph etc) could have transferred and ended up at USC or Bama as upper classmen while this years class decomitted leaving the cupboard even more bare. Par for the course but i think this was for the best. Hopefully a new kicker, line and strength coach follow.
Here’s another way to look at this situation. There’s an old saying “the only thing worst than bad publicity is no
publicity at all.” If anything, it keeps ND in the headlines and on the nightly Sports news. If it keeps people talking about you, and keeps your name out there, I’m not sure that’s entirely a bad thing.
I certain saying about bowl movements and toilets comes to mine. Come on, Swarbrick! Your killing us!
