Weis Returning in 2009?

According to IrishEyes.com, Charlie Weis will be back in South Bend for a fifth season in 2009.  IE broke the story earlier this evening.

Sources have told Irish Eyes that athletic director Jack Swarbrick will publicly announce, most likely within the next 24 hours, that Weis will be back for his fifth season in South Bend.

I must say that I am a little bit surprised.  After three full days of silence on the matter, speculation was that either Weis would not be back in 2009 or that a decision had not yet been made.  The timing of how this has played out is what surprises me the most.  If Weis was to be back in 2009, why not make that statement Sunday to avoid any negative recruiting towards Notre Dame current verbals?

I’m sure there will be plenty of more details will unfold on this subject tonight and into tomorrow and we’ll have more on the apparent decision to bring back Weis later.

And if you changed one play here or there, ND would have beaten USC in 2005, as well as UNC, Syracuse and Pittsburgh in 2008, but perhaps lost to San Diego St. and Navy. The final score is what matters, and, unfortunately, not enough have been in our favor this season. As I mentioned in my first post, Charlie is deserving of criticism. The O-line is not acceptable, and I agree that O-linemen have not developed. However, to say that CW does not know how to coach is factually inaccurate. Have a great day, and GO IRISH!

Who doesnt have trouble with the Giants D-line. Maybe you havent seen former ND player Justin Tuck out there. He is an animal. The coaches put the team in position to win that game. If not for a catch made on top of a players head, the patriots are celebrating another superbowl. Please start watching football.

  3. If they got a new O-line coach in there now, it would validate going to a bowl. The extra practice would be useful to get him acquainted. Blocking has been the biggest problem for a few years and there doesn’t seem to be any more obvious reason other than poor coaching. There is size and talent and other than Robinson for a few games this year, mostly veterans. Young will be a senior and hasn’t developed. You might say the RB’s aren’t good but the line can’t pass block either.

  4. Well, it is all rumors until the AD confirms the rumored 24 hr. announcement. As it stands right now it is unconfirmed.

So, what happens if we make it all the way to Monday as stated by the AD offically?

Interestingly enough, that’s the 1st open window in Urban Meyer’s contract he’s allowed to talk to other schools.

Hmm…Any real correlation here? Or just some tantalizing food for thought.

Now we have the luxurious concept of talking to both Urban and Charlie this coming Monday. A face saving option here?

Or will we know in 24 hrs?

  5. Lol Bob G cracks me up. I have no clue what he says in bulleted points but he actually takes the time to write out a script is great. You guys are “hansenites”. Ha, what does that even mean? I didnt appreciate BOB like I should have. You couldnt get any other wack-job out there like him that takes the time to spit out that garbage. Find it funny because he might be around for a bit and reacting to it is what he wants. Seriously I have been on this site for like 7 years and I recall 3 years ago BoB G debuted with his garbage and at first I was like you guys and responded now as soon as I see his name I scroll down past it.

PS. I am on the CW kool-aid as you guys call it. He is coming back it will be 100% tom. If ESPN reports I think maybe then it will be more viable. I live in south bend and WNDU wouldnt just report it and pull a Kirk Herbstret/Les Miles. Ohh and by the way they arent the only news station to report. WSJV and WSBT also did.

  6. David,
I seem to remember the Patriots losing in the Super Bowl, and having a difficult time with the Giants’s defensive line.

Also, what about 2005 and 2006? Did that have nothing to do with coaching?

  7. @Jacob

I can tolerate people drinking the CW kool-aid but I Cant tolerate people drinking the “Gilleran Gin.” Nothing that wack job says has even a hint of logic or sanity in it.

  8. @ Matt-

Did you see how the patriots did without charlie weis? Let me see if i can remember,…..

Oh yeah, undefeated regular season. The genius lies in Belichek not Chuck.

I am not willing to give up on Notre Dame regardless of how crappy they are, but dont start drinking the CW Kool-Aid yet.

Changes he made after a 3-9 season only got the team 6 wins. Thats 6 wins on a schedule that should have easily had at least 8. Not to mention, only a portion of those wins were convincing.

I hope the report on ESPN about ND not confirming the story is true, because if it isnt, we have one more long year ahead of us.

  9. Rick, calm down. I can tell you’re upset but lets not get carried away.

I’m confused at Gilleran’s post. He starts out wacko as usual and then makes a decent point. Then he goes into attack Weis for being in Hawaii?

… and will someone please tell me what the hell “hasenites” are?

  10. Rick,
Take a couple of Tylenol PM with a warm glass of milk, get a good night’s sleep, and think about what you just wrote in the morning.

Charlie is deserving of some criticism, and I hope changes are made, but the man does know how to coach. Doesn’t he have a few Super Bowl rings, and didn’t he lead ND to 9 wins in 2005 and 10 wins in 2006? Fans seem to have completely forgotten about Charlie’s first two years.

Even before 2007, most fans were looking toward 2010 as the NC year.

If you want to give up on ND after 40 years, then I would recommend that you cheer for USC. They seem to be doing pretty well. Then again, when I was a student at ND in the early 90’s, I seem to remember that we were in the middle of something like a 10-11 game winning streak against the Trojans. History has a way of repeating itself eventually.

I for one am glad that Charlie is back for next season. I would guess that the staff is going to have some changes, and I just hope that ESPN and irrational ND fans have not run our commits off. Go Irish!

  11. Well, certainly wouldn’t have been a credible thread of posts without this guy’s crazy rant. Robert, I’ll mail you a check if you can go ONE post without mentioning these so called “hansenites,” or for that matter, if you post something that doesn’t seem utterly insane.

  12. I can’t believe what I’m reading. “Next will be the year”, ” he needs 5 years to prove himself”. GET REAL
people, You could give him 20 years and the results will be the same!. He can’t coach period. he can’t relate to his players. The have been blown out by every good team they played. Not even close to beating good teams. With teams like that how long do you think recruits will come to ND? Jacob, next year 7 or 8
how many years have I heard that! If they don’t fire CW Than after 40 years of supporting this school I’m done. No more. The stupidty of keeping a bad coach and letting this program fall further down is to much.maybe
ND should play div 2 schools
maybe then CW would win, maybe not

  13. More Drama as of now,

    ESPN Front Page claims:

“Notre Dame Won’t Confirm Reports of Weis’ Return.

Sounds like Scout.com and WNDU Channel 16 is in question.

  14. I can understand the decision to keep Weis to a point. This is very likely to be made official (if things don’t change) within the next two days.

And this decision to give Weis a 5th year is very consistent with ND policy.

Weis inherited two of the worst recruiting classes in ND history (now 5th yr seniors and seniors).

Weis has done pretty well when ND had solid upper classmen who were highly recruited (2005 & 2006).

While it looks like ND made the decision to go with Weis rather than aggressively pursuing their options, I wouldn’t be surprised that coaches like Kelly had some concerns about ND. And I doubt that a top tier coach like Meyer would seriously consider ND under these circumstances.

If ND lacked the realistic patience with Weis, ND might conduct itself the same way with a future coach. Thus, in all likelyhood, these 2nd tier coaching candidates would be asking for some massive golden parachutes.

  15. 2009 is either going to be really good or really bad. I don’t think there’s going to be much middle ground.

Looking at next year’s schedule there’s about 7 near guaranteed wins, 2 probable wins, and 1 or 2 might wins.

There is absolutely no excuse if the team doesn’t get 8 or 9 wins next year.

  16. By the way i sure hope Latina is gone. If he is back then I have no hope for the offensive line. I’m kinda hoping that Corwin Brown will get that head coaching job. I would rather have Tenuta as the D Coordinator. Maybe the defense would get after the qb a little bit better then. I think Brown is a good coach, but i think Tenuta is better.

  17. Jake W,

Exactly. I was indifferent to whether he was back or not but I understand the reasoning. I think a coach should be given 5 years to see what he does with his recruits (outside some glaring issue like lack of recruiting ability).

  18. I agree with the decision. Fire Weis and there goes another recruiting class. What other options at coach are there tho? I’d like Skip Holtz, but he is the only one I see. I have been saying before this season that as long as they make SOME improvement then he should stay no matter what, but if they dont go at least 9 and 3 in 2009 then he’s gone. Maybe 8 and 4.

  19. Excuses are all out the door now. Recruits are grown up. The system should be entirely implemented. All I’ve been hearing is “2009 is the year.” Time to put up or shut up. I like the decision.

With that being said, other than some coaches leaving for other head jobs (Haywood, and more importantly, Corwin, but let’s hope not), does Weis make any changes to his staff? I think we’ve seen enough of John Latina, it’s time to bring in SOMEONE who can teach some sort of technique on the O Line.

  20. This is good to see. I think the “heat” will really be on charlie for his team to perform next year but his first big class will be juniors and SHOULD be cashing in. This also helps to cement this years recruiting class.

On another note (it might have been here) but i see corwin brown getting some attention as a head coach.

  21. I guess Urban Meyer wasn’t ready to commit to them and I guess I can’t blame him since he is getting ready for a SEC Championship and a possible BCS Title.

    This sucks!

  22. Why should ND worry about weather some media outlet thinks the timing is bad.

I am pleased they did it within their organization. that is what he was hired to do. The sun will still come ujp, for me so I have not lost anything regarding its timing.

  23. Talk about being slow on the uptake! We don’t need any uncertainty to affect recruiting so why shoot yourself in the foot??? Another self-inflicted wound!
