Notre Dame, IN (UHND) – Junior wide receiver Duval Kamara had an MRI on his knee early this week which showed a little “roughed up” cartilage. While the injury wasn’t severe enough to prevent Kamara from practicing, the decision was made to have the knee scoped to prevent further injury.

Charlie Weis told the media on Tuesday that Kamara could have practiced with the injury, but the staff felt it was better to err on the side of caution and have the knee scoped now.

Dvual had a little bit of roughed up cartilage. So what I decided to do, instead of having him be hobbled for the next 2-3 weeks, which he would have been, he’s getting scoped right now. They said if I got it scoped now, he’d be back to full back in a couple of weeks.

Kamara, who is competing for the #3 wide receiver spot, should be ready in time for the season opener against Nevada on September 5.

With Kamara out of practice for a couple weeks, the competition for the third wide receiver position is wide open at this point.  Kamara was thought to have the inside track on the position.  Luckily, wide receiver is one of the deepest positions on the team which means the Irish shouldn’t have any trouble handling Kamara’s absence.

Here are the other leading candidates for the 3rd wide receiver spot.

  • Robby Parris -Parris has the most experience of those battling for the spot, but has showed inconsistent hands throughout his career.
  • Deion Walker – Did not play as a true freshmn, but might have the most potential of all of the backup receivers.  Whether or not that potential is ready to be turned into production at this point remains to be seen.
  • John Goodman – Received a lot of praise in the spring and could end up wrestling the 3rd receiver spot away from the pack.
  • Shaquelle Evans – The talented freshman does not look a lot like a freshman and could very well see the field early if he picks up the offense quickly enough.

George West’s MRI Negative

Duval Kamara wasn’t the only wide receiver to have an MRI this week.  Senior George West also underwent an MRI this week, but his came back negative.  West is still expected to miss a few days of pracitce, but it doesn’t appear that he will miss substantial time.
