Yesterday we learned that Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly cleared Michael Floyd to participate in voluntary team workouts and strength and conditioning drills. Today we learned that Floyd is expected to enter into a plea bargain as early as June 28.
According to the South Bend Tribune, William Stanley, an attorney for Notre Dame’s star senior wide receiver, appeared in court on Flyod’s behalf and requested “the case be continued until June 29.”
The extra time, according to the report, is for Floyd’s attorneys to get additional paperwork related to his arrest for driving under the influence the weekend before the kickoff of spring practice. Once they have the information they have requested, a plea agreement could be soon to follow.
“As soon as Michael and I have a chance to review that, we’ll sit down with the deputy prosecutor and see if we can come up with a resolution,” Stanley said.
Without a plea agreement, Floyd faces a maximum of 1 year in prison and a $5,000 fine if convicted in a Saint Joseph County court.
Tuesday’s news appears to be another indication that Floyd is on a path to be reinstated to the football team in time for the fall. For now though. nothing is certain and according to Kelly, Floyd still has work to do before he is able to be reinstated. Settling his legal situation is presumably one of the remaining hurdles for Floyd. Just how many others remain is most likely only known by Kelly, the staff, and Floyd at this point though.
The concept of “punishment” is wrong. Behavior modification is the true path to improving people’s choices. Too much damage is done by “punishing”.
