Notre Dame will have a trio of departing seniors looking to improve their NFL resumes on Saturday afternoon Saturday afternoon at the East West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Florida.  Prince Shembo, Tommy Rees, and Bennett Jackson will all be playing for the West team.

Here’s a quick look at what each of the three need to do at the Shrine Bowl to pad their resumes before the NFL Scouting Combine next month.

  • Prince Shembo – Shembo has shown flashes of elite pass rushing skill throughout his career.  The problem for Shembo is that it’s just been flashes.  He collects sacks in bunches, but then goes through long stretches of not reaching the backfield.   Shembo won’t be able to do much to put those concerns to bed, but if he has one of those games where he lives in the backfield like he did against Arizona State this year, he will grab the attention of some scouts.
  • Bennett Jackson – Heading into the 2013 season, CBS Sports had Jackson rated as one of the best cornerbacks for the 2014 Draft.  Jackson’s senior season, however, was a step back from an impressive 2012 campaign which will likely place Jackson as a late round pick (currently projected as a 7th rounder by CBS).  There aren’t too many elite wide receivers in the Shrine Game this year so if Jackson will have to show some lock down skills in order to improve his stock any.
  • Tommy Rees – Rees enjoyed a surprisingly successful career at Notre Dame that has placed him higher in the Notre Dame record books, but the chances of Rees getting a look from an NFL team are not very high.  Rees did as good of a job as anyone could have hoped for given his physical skills, but Rees’s playing days might not extend much longer.

Notre Dame fans can tune in to NFL Network tomorrow at 4:00 PM to cheer on these three Golden Domers one more time.  They will have some cheerleaders among their former teammates as well.

A 4th Notre Dame senior, TJ Jones, was set to play in the game but had to pull out due to injury.  It’s a shame for Jones that he won’t be able to play because he would have likely been the best wide receiver in the game along with Michigan’s Jeremy Gallon.   It will be important for Jones to get healthy in time for the Combine though because he has the ability to put up strong numbers in Indy to improve his stock.

In today’s game, Shembo probably has the best chance to increase his draft stock simply because we’ve seen him just have those games every now and then where he just can’t be blocked – Boston College 2010 and 2012 (5 sacks combined) and Arizona State in 2013 (3 sacks) for example.  Unfortunately for Notre Dame, Shembo was never able to have that type of impact on a week in and week out basis.

The anchors of the left side of Notre Dame’s offensive line for the last three years, Zack Martin and Chris Watt, are set to play in the 2014 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama next Saturday.  Martin has been mentioned as a possible first round pick in many prominent mock drafts while Watt is currently projected as a 2nd-3rd round pick by CBS.

  1. Love what Zack Martin did at ND but do not see him as 1st round pick at all. Not the prototypical size for a tackle and projects to be more of a guard on the next level.

      1. Well Ron we’ll just have to see where he gets drafted and what position he plays. Please tell me your highly sought opinion where he’ll land in draft and what position he’ll eventually play?

    1. FWIW Mel Kiper currently has Zack Martin projected as a first rounder and his arms measured in slightly longer than previously reported at the Senior Bowl. Mayock said that he is a top 20 pick as well and so far Martin has been impressing at the Senior Bowl.

      1. Frank- I have seen and read that also. I guess you are not allowed to give your opinion here especially when it contrasts the mighty Notre Dame fan base of which I am included. Also lets remember that the NFL, Kiper and Mayock have never got any draft pick incorrect so far. Just saying.

  2. Hope they do well in game time and maybe get a realistic draft pick for those who can step up to the NFL level. Unfortunately, Mr Rees probably will not make it to the next level as a player, at least.
