Notre Dame and Under Armour unveiled the 2016 Shamrock Series uniforms and so far the reviews from the fans have not been positive. Count me in the camp that loves what Notre Dame and Under Armour have come up with for a number of reasons.
For the third year in a row, UA and Notre Dame have teamed up for a fantastic jersey, uniform, and helmet. The combination they concocted this year is conservative – by alternate jersey standards – but still has a great look and a ridiculously good looking helmet. Add it all up and it’s another home run.
When I looked backed at the history of the Shamrock Series uniform yesterday, I noticed that whenever Notre Dame has had a more crazy design, they went more conservative the following season. In 2012 Notre Dame wore perhaps their craziest uniform with the 2-tone helmet. The following year Notre Dame was much more conservative in their uniform. Last year’s “green monster” inspired designs were some of the wildest Notre Dame has worn which made me think the Irish would go conservative this year.
This year’s design would definitely qualify as more conservative than year’s past. Maybe that’s why the designs have been met with some negative reviews among the fan base.
Before I get into why I love these jerseys, here’s a closer look from the Notre Dame Football Twitter account.

Alright, now here’s a few of the reasons I love these jerseys.
- Obviously we here at UHND like the green/gold combination so for starters I liked the colors
- Speaking of the colors, they are another shout out to the opponent – Army – without going full camo as some had been suggesting/hoping for
- Absolutely love the shoes and that Under Armour was able to give them a military boot look
- The subtle homages to Army in the designs are a nice touch
- The helmets are absolutely fantastic
Add all of that up and I love what Notre Dame and Under Armour pulled off with these.

Note, these helmets are HAND-PAINTED and incorporate an illustration from the Basilica. The level of detail is quite remarkable – so detailed that I hope they are able to recreate it on mini-helmets because I would like to buy one. I’d splurge for the full size but I can only imagine how much one of those will be going for.
Honestly, I love the entire ensemble Under Armour and Notre Dame has come up with this year and think the Irish will look great in them inside the Alamodome when they sport them against Army.
Didn’t take Under Armour long to win me over after the 2014 Shamrock Series uniforms. They took the time to draw inspiration from the campus and created something singularly unique for the Irish.
The Fenway uniforms were definitely less inspired, but honestly when Notre Dame plays Boston College you really don’t have much of a choice other than to go “Irish as shit”
And now UA appears to be signalling they’re actually willing to put the same level of attention into every year’s Shamrock Series, this time drawing from both the campus and the opponent. Very cool.
Contrast this to Adidas who gave us uninspired alternate uniforms that just changed color patterns and added a decal here and there. The creative laziness reached its peak with those half gold half blue monstrosities that just seemed to scream “Everyone hated Maryland’s uniforms – maybe we should try the same thing!”
Very cool, might have to buy this although I recognize I will soon have a Shamrock Series collection burdening my closet if I’m not careful.
I have loved most all the alternate uniforms ND wears. 2011 against Michigan was my all time favorite. Last year’s was an awesome modern version and wish they had worn a white “away” version and I wouldn’t mind to have seen a blue version as well but I must say I absolutely adore this year’s!
I agree completely! I actually bought one! My first Shamrock jersey purchase! The best part about them is they have so much detail to them yet they look subtle! love the colors and especially the tribute to Army! Sorry to the haters, but ND/UA nailed it this year! Go Irish!
