(UHND) — Charlie Weis secured his first hand picked quarterback commitment yesterday when Zach Frazer (6-4, 210) committed to the Irish. The Mechanicsburg, PA quarterback is the first quarterback that Weis got to commit to Notre Dame on his own since Evan Sharpley had already committed to Notre Dame prior to Weis’ hiring in December.
The commitment keeps the recruiting momentum that has started the past few weeks going and gives an early indication as to how good this class could be. Tom Lemming has been saying for weeks that there is something different about Notre Dame these days and getting a commitment from Max Emfinger’s #1 rated quarterback is an early indication that Lemming could be right.
Wide receiver Barry Gallup and running back Munir Prince have both committed to Notre Dame in the past few weeks to get things going before the commitment of Frazer yesterday. Frazer was targeted as Weis and Notre Dame’s #1 quarterback early on and his commitment shows the potential that this class has.
Frazer is a top rated quarterback who was named Pennsylvania AAA All State Player of the Year this past season while throwing for 3,684 yards (a state record) and 27 touchdowns as a junior. Frazer had offers from Georgia Tech, Penn State, North Carolina State, Purdue, and Syracuse.
Notre Dame now has three commitments in the early part of recruiting, all on the offensive side of the ball. Charlie Weis and the new staff are showing a major commitment to recruiting and are aggressively pursuing their top targets. If they can sustain the momentum they are building and continue to secure commitments from top rated prospects like Frazer, this class will turn out to be the best class the Irish have seen in years.
