(UHND.com) — The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Wednesday morning that Fort Lauderdale offensive line prospect Daniel Wenger (6’4”, 285 lbs) committed to the Irish giving them 23 verbal commitments and strengthening an already strong offensive line class.
Wenger, the 3rd rated center in the country according to Rivals.com, gives Notre Dame its 4th offensive line commitment and its first from a center prospect. Wenger, high school teammates with fellow ND prospect Sam Young, visited Notre Dame for the Tennessee game and decided he wanted to go to Notre Dame with after just two visits.
His other visit? A trip to Purdue to see the Notre Dame-Purdue game. After seeing the Irish handle Purdue and Tennessee rather easily, Wenger felt Notre Dame was the place for him with its combination of academics, tradition, and football success.
Wenger had offers from in state Florida as well as Purdue, Penn State, Boston College, and Duke.
How Wednesday’s commitment from Wenger affects his teammate, five star offensive linemen, Sam Young, remains to be seen. The two haven’t talked about going to school together, but having one of Young’s teammates on board can only help.
Wenger joins Eric Olsen, Bartley Webb, and Chris Stewart as part of the offensive line class this year with Notre Dame targeting Young and Minnesota prospect Matt Carufel.
After getting just four offensive linemen in the last two recruiting classes combined, two of which have already transferred, landing at least five offensive linemen this year was paramount and it appears the Irish will get at least five.
It is expected that Carufel will announce for the Irish at the Army All American Bowl while its unclear when Young will announce. The Irish are thought to be in the lead for Young however. Should the Irish land the remaining two offensive line prospects they will have on the best oline classes in the county.
