Oliver Visits Tennessee?

The Tennessee site GoVolsExtra is reporting that Notre Dame commitment Nyshier Oliver visited Tennessee this past weekend.

The Vols were able to convince several prospects who are committed elsewhere to make the trip to Knoxville.

Linebacker Petey Smith (Alabama) from Armwood High School in Seffner, Fla., running back Kendrick Hardy (Southern Miss) from Lawrence County High in Monticello, Miss., athlete Marsalis Teague (Florida) from Henry County High in Paris, Tenn., and defensive back Nyshier Oliver (Notre Dame) from St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, N.J., all decided to visit UT despite being committed to other schools.

Oliver’s visit is intriguing because he originally committed to UT in June but later de-committed and gave a pledge to Notre Dame.

Losing Oliver would be a big blow because he is an explosive player who many felt could be another Golden Tate – a raw prospect who has the speed to be a downfield threat.  The fact that Tennessee is the school in question here isn’t good news for Notre Dame considering his earlier commitment to the Vols.  Usuaully when a commitment visits another school this late in the game it isn’t a good thing.  For every Raeshon McNeil (who visited Florida very late in the game but stuck with Notre Dame) there are many more examples of commitments switching schools when they visit this late.

Let’s hope that the Notre Dame staff can keep Oliver in the fold because he is a very talented prospect with a lot of upside.

Looks like we could be in for an eventual close to the recruiting season after a pretty quiet January.

  1. Decommits are disappointing and I agree with an early signing day. However, ND players have done well in the NFL! Quinn, Zibby, Laws, Tuck, Grant, Carlson, Jones and Fasano to mention a few. I believe ND is doing a great job of recruiting considering the obstacles of admissions, cold weather, less diversity and W-L record lately.

  2. I hate to see “kids” change their minds too, but what has happened at ND over the past three months to make them not want to reconsider their decision? Many of these kids are looking at their college choice as a stepping stone into the NFL and ND is a pretty slippery stone at this point.

Weis has lost whatever glitter he had for these kids, and their parents. He is bad for the image of the school and kids and their parents and coaches are seeing it all. I would be surprised if ND doesn’t loose several more before signing day.

  3. I hate decommits too, but I understand this situation. The guy clearly had a huge interested in Tenn originally, and now that the coaching situation is solidified, he wants to check it out and make sure he made the right choice.

  4. i hate decommits too. if you arent 100% sure, just wait. it would be nice to see an early signing date. that might make kids think twice about commiting early, and would help teams in targeting players.

  5. I’d rather have a kid defect now, and make a good decision in the long run, than have a kid commit only to transfer down the road.

  6. I know it’s these kids choices of where to go but man do I hate late defections. I mean come on, don’t string a team a long only to screw them 2 weeks before singing period. Have some respect young man, you made a commitment now stick with it.

  7. Going by what Weis said a while back, if it is true that he visited another school, then he needs is scholarship offer revoked.
