Last year Notre Dame made some headlines for its #PotOfGold recruiting tactic which involved sending recruits hundreds of pieces of Notre Dame themed mail in a single delivery as they steamed toward Signing Day. Well, it looks like the Irish coaching staff is at it again and Notre Dame targets and commitments are likely to receive similar packages based on some tweets from head coach Brian Kelly.
It started on Thursday night when Brian Kelly teased the release of this year’s #PotOfGold.

Kelly wasn’t as vague on Friday. A day later he tweeted out a picture of the Notre Dame coaching staff standing in front of one of this year’s pots of gold.

Notre Dame had some mixed results with last year’s #PotOfGold mailings. The first recipient, Matt Elam, ended up eliminating Notre Dame shortly after he received his, but the second recipient, Nyles Morgan, did end up committing to Notre Dame not long after receiving his jackpot. Morgan went on to play a vital role for the 2014 Fighting Irish following the injury to Joe Schmidt against Navy,
Whether or not the tactic worked last year was debatable, but it did make headlines – both positive and negative. There was enough negative feedback in fact that we published an article last year by Scott Janssen defending the tactic and the #PotOfGold was actually one of the bigger storylines of the entire class of 2014 on Signing Day.
We’ll get a better look at the 2015 edition of the #PotOfGold once recruits start to receive them and tweet out the pictures, but it’s safe to assume that the likes of Alize Jones, Jordan Cronkrite, Dexter Williams, De’Shawn Vaughn, Equanimeous St. Brown, SoSo Jamabo, Justin Reid, and any other remaining and future targets will be receiving their jackpots soon given the tweets from Kelly the last couple of days.
Notre Dame only has a few spots left in this year’s class but a strong finish is needed in order for the class of 2015 to stay within the top 10 team rankings across the different recruiting sites. If the #PotOfGold helps the Irish get, then keep the huge USPS bills coming.
“Blessed are you when men shall revile you and persecute you and shall say all manner of evil against you, for my sake.” Matthew 5:11
That hate- filled redfaced chowderhead from the “Catholic League” (ahem) notwithtanding, it is part of a job description of Christians to be ridiculed by those who despise Christianity or are too ignorant and impatient to understand it. It is also the curse of excellence to be criticized by mediocrity. Noted non-theologian Bobby Zimmerman of Hibbing Minnesota wrote “People want to drag you down into the hole that they’re in.”
People gave negative feedback? yawn.
Negative feedback, ridicule and hateposts are a mere trailing indicator of the rising success of Notre Dame Football.
Some dude on a cross once said “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
In 2015 we should at LEAST equal the hate, the vitriol the negative feedback of 2012. It’s part of Notre Dame’s job description.

Lighten up, Francis.
I’m no insecure teenager, but does this odd stunt have a positive influence on these kids? Really?
I honestly find that incredible.
