Notre Dame was having a rough day on the recruiting trail but they ended it with a bang. Late Wednesday night the Irish picked up a big time commitment from 4-star TE George Takacs. Hours earlier Notre Dame’s class of 2018 took a big hit when 4-star WR Braden Lenzy flipped to Oregon. Luckily for the Irish it was a momentary blip on the radar.
Notre Dame added two 4-star tight ends in the class of 2017 in Brock Wright and Cole Kemet. That might have scared away some tight ends this year, but not George Takacs. Despite two 4-star tight ends coming in a year before him and having offers from the likes of Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Oregon, Tennessee, and Wisconsin; the Florida native committed to Notre Dame on Wednesday night.
Heading into his senior season, Takacs measures in a 6’5″ and weighs in at 235 lbs.

Going into the Irish Invasion, Takacs was on “commit watch”. Greg talked about him in his preview of the Irish Invasion last week. While the latest recruit to join “Tight End U” didn’t commit on the spot, it didn’t take long for Takacs to become the latest member of what has been one of the best classes in the country so far this year – even with a couple recent decommitments.
George Takacs is a composite 4-star tight end according to 247Sports and is the 10th ranked tight end in the country by Rivals. He is also a US Army All-American.
Class Impact
Notre Dame is likely to only take one tight end in this class and with Takacs in the fold the Irish could be done recruiting the position. Unless Alize Mack has a breakout season and leaves for the NFL draft after this season, Notre Dame will have at least four tight ends on the roster in 2018 between Mack, Wright, Kemet, and Takacs. Notre Dame could also bring back Nic Weishar for a 5th year in 2018 as well.
While Mack – formerly Alize Jones – missed all of last year, there has been some speculation this offseason that if Mack blows up this year like many think he could do, he might just have a NFL decision to make. Should Mack explore the NFL and Weishar look to use a graduate transfer, Notre Dame could end up adding a second tight end in the class.
Given all of the variables in play here, Notre Dame would be wise to continue to recruit tight ends and keep tabs on a few that could round out this class if they end up needing to add a second.
With the loss of Lenzy and the addition of Takacs on Wednesday, Notre Dame’s class of 2018 still stands at 12 commits with Notre Dame likely able to take 9-10 more between now and Signing Day. (Or more if there are more decommitments along the way).
seems like a big time talent. Lets keep our fingers crossed he stays committed. I was wondering if anyone out there has any information on a receiver Notre Dame was pursuing a few months ago who was a 3 star but had incredible speed like 4.3. I remember at the time the kid was really high on Notre Dame and was planning a summer visit. Just can’t recall.
