There are eighteen days left in the 2018 recruiting cycle, so a quick look on where Notre Dame stands and where they are going.
They are currently ranked eighth nationally on 247 Sports, with 21 signed players and one committed to sign on February 7th. The Irish are looking to add at least three more players and possibly four if some of their top players decide to sign on to play in South Bend.
Updated Rankings
247 Sports released their final top 247 players, with eight Notre Dame players making that group. Some notes about that:
- Rover recruit Shayne Simon came in as Notre Dame’s highest rising player, climbing 80 spots to #47 nationally. He joins defensive tackle Jayson Ademilola, in the top 50, with Ademilola rising to #45.
- The only other player to rise in the rankings was Jack Lamb, 14 spots to #105.
- The biggest faller was safety Derrik Allen, who dropped 26 spots, to be the lowest in the top eight, at #161.
There has been a lot of buzz about Simon at the all-star game practices, with Steve Wiltfong at 247 saying he could see Simon claiming the starting Rover position as a freshman, pushing 5th year senior Drue Tranquill to the Buck linebacker spot. There is a good discussion to be had about the merits of moving Tranquill, but the buzz around Simon is real. Generally left out of the discussion when discussing Notre Dame’s top 4-5 players, Simon could be a major coup for Kelly and the defensive staff.
A Late Offer At Running Back
With the dismissals of CJ Holmes and Deon McIntosh, plus the move of Josh Adams to the NFL, in a week Notre Dame lost three running backs and are left with only three on scholarship on the roster. And that includes early enrollee Jahmir Smith. Not a great situation.
Notre Dame moved quickly and offered C’Bo Flemister, out of Georgia, who is currently committed to Georgia Tech. You’ll initially notice his low ranking, a borderline three star player, but I’d encourage everyone to watch his film. He’s got pretty good speed with an aggressive one cut running style. He also has a knack for making a cut at just the moment the defense is off balance, and the first player that came to mind when watching him do that was Sony Michel out of Georgia. Not to say he is a player of that caliber, Michel was a five star player, but he is similar in style.
It’s fair to be skeptical of late offers, but I don’t see Flemister as a throwaway offer. He’s got some pretty unique skills and is a good fit given the offense he played in. He has an official visit set up in the coming weeks, so there is a legitimate chance for Notre Dame here. A really good late find for Kelly and the staff, if they can pull it off.
Rumblings And Grumblings
- Notre Dame might be out of it for the four star safety out of Servite, CA, Julius Irvin. This may be a casualty of the Mike Elko departure, as they had a good relationship and he was his main recruiter. The loss of Elko has likely dropped Notre Dame out of the top group of teams, and this late in the game it’s hard to make up a lot of ground, especially without a position coach at the moment.
- The Irish are apparently still in it for Solomon Tuliaupupu, the middle linebacker from Mater Dei in California, but it would be an upset if he actually ended up in South Bend. He’s heavily favored to end up at USC with his five star teammates JT Daniels and Amon-Ra St. Brown, but the promotion of Clark Lea to DC is keeping the Irish in this. It’s not impossible, but not something to be confident in.
- Noted today by UHND is the visit this weekend of wide receiver Lawrence Keys. Word is he wants to wait till signing day to join a school, but Notre Dame will be pushing for a commitment this weekend, as they might run out of room for him should he wait for signing day. I like Notre Dame to end up with Keys.
- A pair of corners, Noah Boykin and newly offered Taiyon Palmer, are still in play for the Irish, with Notre Dame trying to secure a visit with Palmer in the last weeks of the cycle. While Notre Dame went in-home with Palmer last week, if he never makes it to campus, it’s hard to take his recruitment seriously. So, the visit is what to watch for. Boykin has visited, and was previously thought to be favoring Notre Dame. But, as time has gone on, momentum has faded with him. Still, things can change quickly in recruiting, and Notre Dame remains a legit possibility. Just guessing, I’d think Boykin was the better possibility, as Notre Dame has a longer history with him.
Stastically over the top. Performance, mooning in the end zone was exemplary, told it all. Tim Brown is a role model. My great great uncle coached Ty Cobb. He actually got Him to two World Series ( Tigers, lost them both) when He left to join His buddy John McGraw , Cobb never got in another World Series. .

In the offensive line area, timing and strength are both important, as a unit and as individuals. We have big losses to make up there. Balis will help there, but what about the timing? We have an awesome record as home openers in that stadium…so percentages say we beat Michigan. But what if the line stutters after that?
The good news is we won’t need many points (by modern football standards) because of our defense. And with our field goal kicker advantage, we’re good to go.
In this way I could be like Positive Pete…I think our “O” will score a lot. But I’ve been wrong before. BVG’s defense (and so did BVG I suppose) saw some wide open tight end beat them badly 10-20 yards downfield at least three times that I remember in the first half. So where was the adjustment? How does a tight end get open late in the second half by so wide a part of the field? Again, for the last time, the catch is made 15 yards or so downfield with no defender in the TV screen (from any angle). A lack of adjustment at halftime during that period drove me crazy.

Little situational substitution was a hallmark of BVGs tenure. Why was Schmidt not replaced by another DB when it was obvious all Stanford had time for was desperation passes? Because Joe “really knew the defense.” Unfortunately, so did opposing coaches when they played against ND. I hope Lea continues the Elko strategy of pressuring opponents’ QBs like he did vs. LSU in the Citrus Bowl when that game was on the line. No late game “prevent you from winning D’ ” that I used to watch on Saturdays with ND and then on Sundays with Lovey and the Bears. If you’re going to lose, at least go down aggressively.

Again , read the posts. HH O-line had two years of a good running game — 2015 and 2017. Not denying that. You can blame the BVG defense , Kelly , The Qb’s , Jack & Jill , The Menedez Brothers , Rudy or your neighbor next door–but don’t tell me HH is the annointed God of O-Line from 2012 to 2017. Do you even remember HH as the O-line coach in 2012 or the running backs , or the rushing stats in 2012 ? Betcha remember Manti Te’o and the Defense that got Irish to the NC , the field goal that beat Pitt , the goal line stand versus Stanford. How bout 2013 , 2014 any reccolection of HH making head lines as an O-Line Guru coach ?

My most improved defensive player nominee is Shaun Crawford, who had a blazing start and then tailed off. Remember he’d been injured for two years, and probably needs another offseason of weights and conditioning to sustain his top level of play (ask Dantonio) through a full 12 game schedule.
My nominee for most improved offensive player is Brandon Wimbush. A year ago, he’d barely met Chip Long and Tommy Rees. this is not a riskless pick, but I’ll put my chips on Wimbush.
My nominee for surprise offensive player is Michael Young. That td against LSU is a sign that he can play, and now he knows his way around. Check the Frosh-soph progress liines of Will Fuller, Equanimeous St. Brown and Chase Claypool.

You know guys, I was at ND as a student in 75 when it got loud from the stands, especially the student stands, about a QB “controversy”…I remember some drunk (student) behind me bellowing “give him his diploma, send in Montana” when a QB majoring in Architecture was in there…it was a five year program then for your undergraduate degree.
We don’t want to go there again. And it got louder all year.

I’ve said it before and say it again. Harry Heistead O-Line coach had an up/down resume when it came to his stint at ND. My problem with him is , despite his talent of producing NFL talent–was his failure to keep a unit to perform in sync on the playing field on a consistant basis under his reign as O-Line coach. Signs of a good O- Line coach is the running game. There are only two years under Kelly and O-Line coach HH –that produced a running attack worthy of elite status among top College Programs. That would be 2015 with Adams/Procise and 2017 with Adams&host of RB’s. My point is —where were was the O-line in 2016 or the other years under HH ? No doubt , if I recall numerous posters on here questioned the O-Line performance under HH—The atrocious pass blocking and the failure to produce a running game. You can give HH all the accolades on producing NFL players—but when it came to on the field success on college level — I’ll give him a 3 star. As far as this new O-Line coach Quinn—I wouldn’t be so quick to judge him—if you are comparing him to HH. Quinn has a good resume/back ground in O-Line production–which hopefully translates into a whole unit of O-line players—instead of just a few like Mcglinchy/Nelson or the Martin brothers.

But Ballou was highly valuable, more than a “mere” assistant. He came from IMG. But Ballou has the reputation

Until I saw the poolpah at some other sites, I had been unaware that “ALL OF KELLY’S RECENT HIRES” had been with him at Grand Valley
and Central Michigan. Some knave altered the data and erased any such evidence for the hires of Autry Denson, Todd Lyght,
DelVaughn Alexander, Chip Long, Mike Lea, Mike Elko and Terry Joseph. I suspect Deep State or the ghost of Rose Mary Woods

Although losing anyone who benefits the program is a setback, I feel better learning that Ballou left for his alma mater rather than Balis leaving for a lateral move, especially after so many of NDs players credited Balis for their improvement and development.
Mea culpa to fellow posters. I try to be careful about what I post; when it’s a ‘rumor’, I’ll state it as such.
I also try to keep in mind that as a poster, not to be abusive to the young student-athletes on the team; before I post a comment, I try to always ask if I, too, was as immature or showed other acts of poor judgment when I attended, and then often concluding that I was, I opt not to condemn or villify them for their immaturity.
Such hesitation regarding condemning our student-athletes might be a process we all could consider more often.

David, if that happened I would think you would be happy. But so would BJ, and he’s a good poster. A lot of people would be happy. Personally I think that it’s a bad time to change coaches, I would rather we had changed before 2017 than change now!…but with one more 7-6 year, it would not matter. The only thing is, with a defense that looks to be ND strong coming, and the accuracy problem has been addressed in the passing game…and we own the “field goal” game, so to me, things look good for 2018. My biggest concern is rebuilding the “O” line…hopefully making it a little quicker, but still physically strong.

Thanks MTA , Duranko and other posters for latest news and in depth research on recruits/new coaches. I browse around a bit myself — and I came across Eric Hansen–writer for ND Insider/South Bend Tribune. He mentions “Nick Coleman” as in the mix of a running back for 2018. But that’s it. Now , all I know of Coleman is his is being played at corner back since recruited and Elko moving him over to safety in 2017. I’m curious though –as to Eric Hansen’s dropping line about Nick Coleman as a runninning back. So , I looked up his bio—and sure enough Coleman was a First Team All State running back out of Kettering , Ohio. Notre Dame liked that he had D-BACK potential. Fast forward and that’s where Coleman is now. Knute Rockne All American–the movie from 1940 is being televised on TCM channel On Demand. It’s showing till Jan 24. I highly recommend it for ND fans of all ages. First time I saw it–I was as a little kid—but have seen it quite a few times over the years. Pat O’ Brian plays the lead role as Rockne, and Ronald Reagan plays the part of George Gipp. There are some neat film clips of ND campus , Golden Dome , and football action of ND versus Army. For sure , the movies of that era were a bit corny in dialogue and humor —but that’s the way it was back then.
I don’t know Southside, moving from defensive back to running back, very questionable.

Sounds like a nice pickup. If defenses that he coached had those kind of stats what is he doing in North Carolina?
Ryan, I like your question, but UNC’s defensive problems would probably have upped the salary and opportunity to show his stuff
by moving to Chapel Hill, sort of like Elko did coming in to clean up the Augean Stables of ND’s 15-16 defense.
The Heels cleaned house after Gene Chizik stepped down, and they brought in John Papuchis from Nebraska.

When Charlton Warren left for Tennessee, UNC quickly brought in Terry Joseph from Texas A&M. Joseph’s time in College Station peaked when the Aggies finished fourth in passing yards allowed per game in the nation in 2015. Before his time at Texas A&M, Joseph has experience working with Papuchis, having been the defensive backs coach at Nebraska, where his teams also rated highly in defending the pass.
Joseph also comes in as a highly rated recruiter. Considering UNC’s current secondary, there’s not much improvement to be made this year at least.

One of the skills I most anticipated BK bringing to Notre Dame was his ability to recruit his “RKGs” and develop them into contributing players. I hoped it would help ND overcome their struggles in recruiting certain position groups.
I’ve been fairly disappointed by that skill up until this past season. Myron and Hinnish were both used very effectively—they weren’t asked to do to much, but they did have the skill to do what was asked. I’m hoping to get similar value from some of last years late editions.
So let’s hope Kelly sees a way to maximize what this kid can do (though I hope he spends more time letting Dexter Williams do what he can do).

A panic offer to a “low 3-star” RB. Who is currently committed to a school where the coaching staff is very stable, and where they run the ball. A lot.
Like the article said Dave he’s not a throw-away 3-star. He supposedly has some good moves and if you remember, many great players have played at ND that were 3-starswhen they started there.

Yeah, I mean, no reason to even consider a 4 star recruit. Josh Adams had six good games. That’s all the proof you need.

I’d say the offer is shrewd rather than panicked. Try to poach a player you feel can fill a hole and that you have an outside shot to get.
Bringing in low rated recruits late can be a mixed bag. You don’t want to use scholarships on players who will never climb the depth chart; but you also don’t want holes in your roster. Remember when Trevor Laws led the team in tackles because our defensive line consistent of almost only Trevor Laws and he had to play every down? Or when the blue/gold game had to be offense vs. defense because we didn’t have the players to form two full teams? Better to grab a player who can do something for you than leave gaps like that.
Besides, running backs are versatile special team players. I’d be more concerned if we were adding a low rated QB or lineman.
