VanGorder Talks Early Fall Camp ’14 Defensive Progression

New Notre Dame defensive coordinator talked about the very early impressions from the first two days of training camp at Culver Academy on Tuesday evening.  WatchND had the video on YouTube which you can view below along with some notes and highlights.

  • VanGorder said the veterans were more familiar with the scheme but preached consistency and the need for his defensive troops to consistency make plays.
  • The OTA’s this off-season helped the Irish get off to a faster start this fall since it helped accelerate the learning process of BVG’s new defensive system.
  • VanGorder likes what he sees after two practices, but again preached that the team needs to be more consistent and pay attention to defense.
  • In order for the defense to take advantage of VanGorder’s more aggressive scheme, they still need to get more comfortable and be able to play fast.
  • There are a few players that VanGorder is cautiously optimistic about after the very early returns, but he stopped short of naming any names.  BVG said it’ll take a couple weeks before they really know which players are really standing.
  • All in all, a lot of coach without any off the wall analogies like were the norm with Bob Diaco – Notre Dame definitely has a different defensive coordinator in 2014.

  1. Well, Jerry we may differ here but I am hoping that we have a young defense every year. If we were to lose Day and Russell to the first day of the NFL draft in 2015 that would continue to make us young but imply that we were excellent at those two positions. That is a bargain I would take.

Similarly, it would surprise me if Jaylon Smith plays his Senior Year at Notre Dame, and I have a wild hope that Max Redfield joins him as leaving after year three.

the great defenses, like Bama’s and like Carroll’s at SC are losing studs after their third year.

It’s a brave new world out there.

    1. I think we are so used to a talent drought that we get really attached. In Bama they just yawn and plug in the next star.

  2. Young guy with intelligence and swagger…I am buying stock. The question is, do we have the talent to stop an Alabama or Florida State? We get to find out this year….

  3. I like a concept involving speed & aggressive D. Naturally I look forward to what develops for Notre Dame 2014.
