Brian Kelly Talks Fall Camp ’14 Day 3

Brian Kelly was interviewed by WatchND after practice on Wednesday to give his thoughts on where the Irish are after three days of fall camp.

  • Kelly talked again about being pleased with the retention from OTA’s.
  • Kelly talked about philosophically being similar to Brian VanGorder in wanting to dictate the tempo of the game.  To do that, Kelly mentioned creating a mentality of playing fearless.
  • When asked about players he has been pleased with so far, Kelly said that Chris Brown and Will Fuller will be playing prominent roles on offense and Devin Butler and Cole Luke on defense.  Kelly also said that we are going to see a lot of guys in the mix on third downs to create a pass rush.
  • One thing that was interesting was that Kelly mentioned we may see some players we aren’t used to seeing and may see them at positions we aren’t used to see them playing at.
  • Kelly thinks the depth is as good as it’s been since he has been at Notre Dame.  He did say that there may have been better front line players in the past but across the board depth is as good as its been.

  1. Goodness gracious! Jhhhhhoonnnnnnyy Williams looks like an SEC WEst player, and he just arrived from nearby Berrien Springs only 6 weeks ago!

It is remarkable that we got the quartet of DES that can play and prosper and sack in the 4-3 in one class: Williams, Blankenship, Trumbetti and Bonner.

But Williams has the right look and he will dress out at 270+ as a junior.

For Jacked Dome there are two approaches to clock management one is to shorten the game, the other is the Oregon approach, to score so fast, with so little time between plays that you use your pace to intimidate opponents and put them in an early and inescapable hole.

And Jack the Law of averages ain’t a real law, it’s kind of a suggestion.

  2. You could actually be a better team and have the same record as the year prior against a tougher schedule

  3. Every rule has an exception except the rule of “Every rule has an exception.” Playing fearless will work against every team that plays with fear against ND. Every team that has more talent than us and also plays fearless (Alabama 2012) will not have issues with ND, especially at the line of scrimmage. This plan works for 75% of ND games or a 9-3 record, if they lose the bowl game then they are at exactly the same record as last year…if they win the bowl game they are a whole game better and I am not happy with either. Let’s play fearless, smart, stick to schemes and above all sound, fundamental football. Tight end releases for big gains and Touchdowns need to be eliminated. Play clock management, long pass plays to wide open receivers, reverses, options (and why should ANYONE ever be able to run the option against ND, even the academies?) All these things are fundamental…solid, fearless and confident play on both sides of the ball please….Please?

      1. Nope. He’s done the math and came to 91.47. So he’s just rounding up.
They do teach math at NotaDame.

  4. “a mentality of playing fearless.”

this is achieved by flawless execution or at least a high percentage execution. 90%
