Former Notre Dame Captains Have Message for ’19 Captains
On Saturday morning, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly named seven captains for the 2019 season. A star-studded group of former Notre Dame captains shared messages of encouragement and advice for this year’s group in a pre-recorded video as well.
Former captains featured included:
- Drue Tranquill – LB, 2017-2018
- Sheldon Day – DE, 2014-2015
- Tyler Newsome – P, 2018
- Manti Te’o – LB, 2012
- Isaac Rochell – DE, 2016
- Brady Quinn – QB, 2005-2006
Brady Quinn specifically can provide advice to Ian Book as a QB1 captain for the Irish. Only one quarterback since Quinn, Jimmy Clausen, has been a captain at Notre Dame since Quinn’s graduation following the 2006 season. Like Quinn, Book could end up being a two-time captain if off-season rumblings of Book already planning on staying for a 5th year even with a big senior year turn out to be true.
Quinn also knows what it’s like to enter a season with lofty expectations following a hugely successful season. He guided Notre Dame to a 9-3 record and a BCS bowl bid in 2005 before entering the 2006 season #2 with national championship aspiration. Quinn’s advice was to finish the mission after the Irish accomplished their goal of making the College Football Playoffs but fell short of the ultimate goal of winning a national championship.
